Firstly I apologise for my absence, but unfortunately my wife was rushed into hospital, so what with visiting her and since she's been home looking after her, I just have not had the opportunity to get away from home and get a few hours out with the camera, but last Thursday I managed a visit out.
I firstly visited the Egleton Reserve as an Osprey Male, 6K/14 had decided to carry out some remedial works and rebuild the nest on the nest platform on Lagoon 4. This is a first time returning bird so he is hoping to attract a female with his nest building skills with the hope of mating next year, but so far to no avail unfortunately but its still early days, we will have young birds returning for the first time into June.
After this I headed for Eyebrook to meet up with a friend who was travelling up from near London, this is a gent I have met up with at Eyebrook and after my break he wished to meet up fo a catch up.
I missed the Ospreys fishing but I saw a few Red Kites and was treated to a Barn Owl as I was leaving for home.
An update on our Barn Owls at home. It appears we are down to the single male that fledged from the box last year, he has never departed all Winter and has still not managed to attract a female unfortunately, must try harder.

RUTLAND WATER.
EGLETON RESERVE.
Egleton Reserve, Greylag Goose, Lagoon Four, Dunlin Hide.
Sitting on her nest sound asleep bless her.
Greylag Goose, Male. This male then swam by at a distance of about 50 metres then the following happened. |
I must admit I thought somebody had fallen in with the splash. |
Once back on the surface we went straight into a forward roll. |
Arriving back up and a quick shake. |
Then straight into another forward roll. |
A bit of a shimmy. |
Then we started to show off, a forward and barrel roll combined, then the bathing was over. |
Osprey Nest, Lagoon Four, Dunlin Hide. This was the main reason for my visit, to watch the Osprey nest building but unfortunately this was all I saw initially. |
In for his second dive on the goose. |
Goose removed and a more relaxed male flies around the lagoon. |
And away to land in the trees between Lagoons 4 and 3, THE VICTOR. |
Great Crested Grebe, Dunlin Hide. This bird swam by about 40 meters away, must be a nest somewhere near but I could not find it. |
Same bird swimming away but with head dress feathers up. |
Shelduck Drake, Lagoon 4, Dunlin Hide. Several of these ducks were flying about all the time I was present. |
Oh, they are beautiful John. I love them all, but, the last one is spectacular, thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Bob,
ReplyDeleteThe last image of the first chick hatching was a real bonus, I wondered with all the awful weather they have had to endure if we would have any chicks.
It was wonderful to get out and about again and get some images of these beauties.
All the best, John
Hi John,
ReplyDeleteWhat is that shocking when I read that your wife had to go to hospital in haste.
I hope it is not serious and that it is going well with her now.
You could photograph the gray goose when he took a bath :-)
You first saw an empty nest of the osprey but fortunately you saw them afterwards on the nest and an approaching one. Great photos of the osprey and also the grebes.
The red kite is amazing !! I hope to meet them once again :-)
You've made beautiful pictures of it.
Making a photo of the barn owl has also become quite fun :-)
A lot of improvement for your wife and also for you strength.
Kind regards and take care,
Helma
Hi Helma,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the concern for my wife, she is on the mend and starting to feel better but still very weak.
I really enjoyed the Greylag Goose bathing, the first time I have ever seen this. Also after the long walk it was satisfying to see the Osprey seeing away the Egyptian goose.
The Red Kite was also good to see but I just wish they would come that bit closer.
And the bonus of seeing the Barn Owl at the end of my afternoon was tops.
Thank you again for the good wishes for my wife.
Kindest regards to you.
John
Very sorry to hear about your wife John and please give her my best for a quick recovery. She must love your photos, they truly are fabulous. Thank you for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteHi Denise,
DeleteThank you for the interest in my wife, she is coming along slowly.
I was so lucky with the weather for my first trip out for a time and of course I had to get back home for my wife, I had a most enjoyable afternoon with the birds.
Always a pleasure to put up a blog I am pleased with.
All the best, John
Hi John,
ReplyDeleteI laugh when I see a goose taking a bath! What a bustle, lol.
I remember you told me about the Egyptian geese and the Osprey nests. Naughty.
I hope your wife is recovering and it's okay for her.
Bye John and take care of yourselves.
Hi Nathalie,
DeleteI had never seen a Greylag goose have a bath but it was wonderful to watch and record.
Hopefully this new male Osprey can attract a female and they will breed next year, he most certainly will protect the nest.
My wife is recovering slowly and they say it will take time, thankyou.
All the best, John
I love those goose shots, John. They put a smile on my face.
ReplyDeleteI hope that Veg is continuing to mend - please give her my best wishes.
Take good care - - - Richard
Hi Richard,
ReplyDeleteIt is the first time I have ever seen a goose bathe in such a way, normally they just tuck the head under water and let the water spread over the back. I think this one was showing off.
Thank you for the phone calls over my wife, much appreciated.
All the best, John
Wonderful!! All of it.The goose sequence captured so well and the shots of Red Kite fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a barn owl on the farm again and think Little Owls have deserted us too.
Good the Ospreys are hatching so hopefully another good year for them .
Very enjoyable blog, worth waiting for.
Hope Veg continues to improve and is feeling better. M
Hi Margaret,
ReplyDeleteI had a wonderful afternoon just wandering about with the camera and was lucky with all that turned up.
Its the first time I have ever seen a goose bathe in such a way.
We will just have to hope we get a Barn Owl to decide to take up residence in your box.
Glad you enjoyed your visit.
The Ospreys are doing wonderfully and growing already, I was on duty Thursday and we were very busy with visitors.
All the best and see you soon. John
Hi John: Sorry to hear that Veg has been hospitalized, but thankfully she is now back home and making progress I hope. I don’t know where to start with this great series of images, but the bathing sequence of the Greylay Goose is pretty amazing. And I love the shot of the Great Crested Grebe with his “hairdo” - I think mine looked like that sometimes when I still had hair!
