OUR BARN OWLS.

Just a quick up date on the Barn Owls and young, she laid six eggs but it looks as if we are up to four Owlets and two non viable eggs we think, this is brilliant and we are over the moon with these birds and still watching them on the television on a regular basis.

We are sure that this pair are different adults to the pair we had previously but still don't appear to be ringed.

I am hoping to feel better by this next week and to be able to get out and about and start to get some images of other birds.

Female Barn Owl.

She just came out of the box and stood on the front watching the world go by, some nights she will have a little fly about but only leaves her precious young for a couple of minutes.

These images are all taken on ISO 8000, and the very last few at  ISO 10000.

Just having a look around the back of the box

The females are much lighter in colouration and don't have the flecks on the breast feathers.

Male Barn Owl.

Here having delivered a mouse into the box, sits for a few minutes before going away hunting again. This Male is very heavily flecked on the chest.

Returns with a mouse for the growing young.

Female Barn Owl.

Having another look out the entrance and a cool down as we have had some very warm and muggy weather.

Another quick jump out onto the front of the box for a minute and then back into the Owlets.

Male Barn Owl.

Just off hunting again to feed the hungry mouths. By the time I took this image it was getting very dark.

Inside the Nest Box.

Awful image, we are getting some interference from somewhere. Female is on the right and Owlets to the left.

I hope you have enjoyed your visit as much as I did in the getting of the images. Thank you for your visit. If you leave a comment I will always reply.

  1. Truly beautiful shots of your Barn Owls, and you managed to get an image with mouse for the young. Must be wonderful to have them in your back garden and able to watch all their comings and goings. Inside the nest box too. Hope you are feeling better and back on your Osprey duties soon. M

I was out for 1 hour last night and the male brought back 10 mice in the time I was out in the garden. Should be on duty this Thursday, visited the Doc on Friday and she says I am at last on the correct medication ?????? {hopefully} All the best and see you soon. John

    1. Hi Denise and welcome back home, hope you are both settling in after your mammoth journey. Barn Owls are such beautiful birds and to have them nest in your garden is such a bonus, images on tap. I will be out again later on if we get no rain. Downside is they won't appear till nearly dark. Thanks for all your travelling posts, it has been real delight. All the best, John Hopefully health wise I'm considerably better

  5. Fantastic shots, John, considering the conditions. I see what you mean about the amount of flecking on the male - amazing!

I hope that your health continues to make good progress this time. Take good care - - - Richard

  6. Hi Richard and thank you, as you have found yourself its not easy to get good images due to poor light. Hopefully as the Owlets grow the adults will be out and about earlier so I will have to see what I can do then. Hope you had a good birthday. All the best, John

    1. Hola German y gracias por la visita, tan bueno como es para obtener imagenes de los Bohus de granero, el problema en este momento es que salen tan tarde en el dia y por lo tanto, significa altos numeros ISO. Todo mejor de Inglaterra, John

    2. Oh WOW, I bet they are keeping you very busy!!
Lovely images of both birds, I cross my fingers hoping the 2 chicks will make it successfully!
Your footage proves that ringing (banding) is not a necessity, and that we can help them without this very intrusive and disturbing practice for the birds.
I am leaving for Madagascar tomorrow until the end of the month... A few bird species are the same as in southern Africa, I can't wait!
Keep well John and take care :)

  11. Hi Helma, its really great news to have these Owls in the garden. I am just about to go out and watch out for the adults starting to hunt for them. I had the camera on earlier and all looks well. So pleased you enjoyed the images, not easy to get as the adults are still not coming out early and its virtually dark. All the best, thanks you for your visit. John

  13. Hi Ana, thank you for the comment, they are not easy to get images from as its virtually dark when they decide to appear. The young were ringed last night so they will feature in my next blog. Barn Owls are a delight to us and we are so lucky to have them. All the best, John

  14. No one wants to be sick, John, but if you have to be laid up for a while, having those Barn Owls right outside your window must help a little. I am glad that you have been able to share so many pictures with us.

  15. Hi Both the Barn Owls really helped me through and what better then sitting in a hide and watching them, some times we would watch from the bedroom window. I just hope I'm not boring people with the images that I personally am fascinated with. I just hope people realise they are totally wild birds that have just picked our land to raise the young on. All the best, John

About Me;

Titus White:
Hi I am Richard Peglers friend Titus White, and those who follow Richards posts will understand the name and reason for it. I have been birding with Richard for 3 years and a volunteer at Rutland Water on the Osprey Project for 2 years. My early images were taken on a Nikon D80 with a 70 - 200mm lens. I updated the lens to a 70 - 300mm VR lens but still was not happy with the results. Eventually when Nikon announced the D7100 I decided to change so upgraded the camera and also invested in a Sigma 50 - 500mm lens.
I first met Richard through Arthur Costello as I was having the occasional visit from Little Owls on our land. We eventually found the Little Owls through another contact about 100 metres away. Photo's will follow on future posts.
I have recently upgraded my camera to full frame, this is a challenge I am at the moment enjoying trying to get the best out of the beast.
